i need to hear your sweet voice

St. Paul & The Broken Bones – Call Me

While visiting Minneapolis last weekend my friend Rob turned me on to St. Paul & The Broken Bones. I’ve been losing my mind over them ever since. Paul Janeway is a soul shouter of the first degree with a top-notch band that keeps it so tight that Janeway can’t help but spring up and out. You can check out “Call Me” above and enjoy their KEXP session below.

left your heart torn

John Newman is one of the best things to happen to pop music in a long time. He’s got a killer voice and nods to soul and R&B while still sounding fresh. Last week Newman released this video for “Out of My Head,” but we wanted to introduce you to him with the more upbeat “Love Me Again”. Featuring Northern soul with a twist, the video is an instant M|H favorite.

M|H also recommends listening to Tribute in its entirety. Stream it below!

that’s like me asking you to take out your shoe laces

Neko Case  – People Got A Lotta Nerve (weird and lovely illustrations)
James Morrison – Nothing Ever Hurt Like You (pounding soul chorus)
Ezra Furman and the Harpoons – Take Off Your Sunglasses (Dylan-esque retro goodness)
Company of Thieves – Oscar Wilde (more proof of Wes Anderson’s influence)
Bat for Lashes – Daniel (crazy and Radiohead-approved)
Mt. St. Helen’s Vietnam Band – Cheer For Fate (destructive forces)
Shocking Blue – Mighty Joe (they can’t keep a straight face)

and, for the throwback:
Sleater-Kinney – You’re No Rock N Roll Fun (love the overheads)
