paper tiger mixtape

When we saw that Midwestern hip-hop collective Doomtree (P.O.S, Sims, Dessa, Cecil Otter, Lazerbeak, Mike Mictlan, and Paper Tiger) was coming to town, we jumped on the chance to see if they’d make us a mixtape. Live DJ, producer, and graphic designer Paper Tiger was so kind as to agree, and has given the world an amazing mix of hip-hop, 80s, and indie to get pumped on before catching them on tour. The Madison, Wisconsin show on Friday, March 9th at Union South’s The Sett is free, so be sure to come out. Stick around after – Paper Tiger and Lazerbeak will be DJing the after party.

songbook: patty lee

In M|H’s weekend feature, songbook, I’ll be looking at some of my favorite songs. Some I haven’t listened to in years, some I keep in regular rotation, but all having in some way informed my life, my taste, and and how I view music.

Les Savy Fav – Patty Lee

I’m not one-hundred percent sure where I first heard “Patty Lee”, but what I do know is that once I did, I listened to it about ten times a day, every day, for a long time. It’s four minutes of indie rock perfection. Trilling guitars, nods to the early years of indie, and some weirdo lyrics that are fun to scream all work together to make something magic. Don’t believe me? Give it a few listens and before you know it you too will be proclaiming that “back before Babylon, shit was cool.”

Les Savy Fav got a second chance with me thanks to “Patty Lee”. In my early days of college, they were suggested to me by a girl who I knew from music committee (the student board in charge of booking weekly concerts on campus). Hilary and I had a lot of music in common, but my favorite songs at the time were mostly pop-punk and emo. I gave Les Savy Fav a listen, but they didn’t take root. Thank God I stumbled across them again, because it’d be a shame to have missed this gem.
